USB-C hubs: the compatibility checks that save a return

One connector can carry very different capabilities. Here is what to check before you buy.

The connector is not the specification

USB-C describes the connector, not a promise that every feature is available. Check your computer's documentation for supported data speeds, video output and charging input. Then compare those capabilities with the hub and cable.

Plan displays and charging together

Confirm the supported display modes for your exact operating system. Some multiple-display arrangements mirror rather than extend on particular computers. A hub can reserve some power for itself, so advertised charging input may differ from the power passed to the laptop.

Buy for the ports you will use

Make a list of simultaneous connections, including storage, Ethernet and displays. Shared bandwidth can affect performance when several devices are active. Look for clear specifications, warranty terms and a seller you can identify. This is a compatibility guide, not a hands-on product review.
